§  In 1935, the Indian National Congress (INC), for the first time, officially demanded a Constituent Assembly to frame the Constitution of India.

§  In 1938, Jawaharlal Nehru, on behalf of the INC declared that ‘the Constitution of free India must be framed, without outside interference, by a Constituent Assembly elected on the basis of the adult franchise’.

§  The demand was finally accepted in principle by the British Government in what is known as the ‘August Offer’ of 1940.

§  The Constituent Assembly was set-up in November, 1946 as per the Cabinet Mission Plan of 1946.

§  After the Partition, the strength of Constituent Assembly was reduced to 299. Its first meeting was held on 9th December, 1946 with Sachidanand Sinha as the interim President.

§  On 11th December, 1946 Dr Rajendra Prasad was elected as the President of the Constituent Assembly. Objective Resolution was moved by Jawaharlal Nehru.

§  The Drafting Committee was appointed on 29th August, 1947, with Dr B.R. Ambedkar as the Chairman.

§  The Constituent Assembly took almost 3 years (2 years, 11 Months & 18 days) to complete.

§  On 26th November, 1949, the people of India through the Constituent Assembly adopted, enacted and gave themselves the Constitution of India.

§   The last meeting of the Constituent Assembly was held on 24 January 1950.
